I
took the photo to the left in mid-August soon after
my recently acquired 1955 Studebaker President had
been delivered from the Northeast. The Studebaker
survives, the building does not.
Soon after Hurricane Katrina, a few commentators
spoke to the press. Pass Christian Books is "irrevocably
damaged" said one. Another spoke of the "destruction"
of Pass Christian Books.
Pass Christian Books was more than walls, shelves,
and a cash register. Pass Christian Books is a place
to discuss ideas, forge friendships, recommend and
exchange thoughts about books, and to share the
joy of a recent reading experience. It is a place
for the meeting of minds.
In mid-October when Rich and I could gain access
to the internet and the bookstore's e-mail, we were
overwhelmed by more than 400 e-mails from friends,
customers, authors, and publishers. The messages
inquiring about the bookstore, our well-being, and
sending thoughts and wishes came from places as
far flung as Santa Cruz, California, Evansville,
Indiana, Ponchatoula, Louisiana, Staad, Switzerland,
and Wetumpka, Alabama. Many of our friends here
on the Coast lamented the loss of their personal
libraries.
Since the storm the outpouring of support from our
business partners (and friends) to help us recover
and continue in business has been more than one
could have hoped for. The American Booksellers Association,
ABEBooks.com, Designer Websites, Dell Computers,
The Booklink, Ingram, Harcourt, Random House, Lemuria
Books, University Press of Mississippi, MacAdam/Cage,
and St Paul Travelers are just a few that have gone
over and above.
We will build back our walls as soon as possible,
but we never lost our bookstore.
